Unity

Good morning.  The class and I had a good discussion this morning about what the virtue for the month means.  We decided that UNITY is working together to be a team and celebrating the differences of our classmates because that way each person has something to share with the team.

We also reviewed CARING and RESPECT and how they work with unity.

Students need skates on Wednesday and Friday this week.  Spelling test today and Wednesday.

Looking forward to seeing many of you Wednesday at Family Literacy Night. Please be sure that you have let us know how much pizza your family will eat so you don't go home hungry. Special thank you to all the other staff who are helping us out too!

Fun

It sounds like the ski trip was amazing.  Each child had a story to tell me about something wonderful that happened on the trip.

Grade three skates Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Spelling test tomorrow.

We continue with OUTLAW time, I think the new schedule is working well.  We are all adjusting to having lunch 15 minutes later though :)

Tickets are on sale for a night with Hoja on Feb. 13.  Contact any student in grade 12 or the office if you have not been contacted and are interested in getting tickets.

Have a wonderful week!

Ski trip and skating

Your children may have already told you but I wanted to ensure that you knew the latest ski trip development.  My spouse surprised me with a trip to Phoenix which means that while the grade 3-6 students are skiing, I will be wearing shorts and checking out Arizona.  Mrs. Tenney will be in for me and knows all the ins and outs of the hill.  Mrs. Hunter, Mr. Dalrymple, Ms. Roach and Mrs. Walter will also be there.

Further details to follow next week - please send forms by Thursday!

***Skating tomorrow and Thursday of this week**** Send skates and helmets please.

Welcome to 2013

Happy New Year!

I hope that your holiday was all that you needed it to be.  I certainly enjoyed some time with family and friends and managed to catch up on some much needed rest.

The grade 3-6 ski trip is on Jan. 18th.  Notes will be coming home today.  Please return the permission form and information form as soon as possible. It is really important to fill in all the information about height and weight as that is how the ski staff set your child's bindings.

Last call for STEVE NASH BASKETBALL forms.  Ms. Peach asked that they were in by tomorrow.

Mrs. Burzynski, Ms. Hermanson and I are in the planning stages of FAMILY LITERACY night 2013.  It will likely be the last week of January - watch for more details.  This is an evening for grade 1-3 students and their siblings.

First spelling test of the year will be tomorrow!

Blessing

Each morning this week I have had the face of at least one of your children beaming at me while they presented me with a gift.  I appreciate the thoughtfulness that you have shown with what you have made for me or with what you have purchased.

It is at this time of year that we reflect on the blessings in our lives, and one of the best gifts I have been given is the opportunity to influence the lives of your children.  It is truly a privilege to work in this school where we have the support of parents and the whole community in the work that we do at the school.

Thank you for blessing me with your trust and support in the educational journey of your children.

The tragedy in Connecticut reminds me that I do work in a wonderful profession filled with people who put children first every day and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the students placed in their care.

I wish you a holiday season filled with happiness and joy, and a year filled with blessing both expected and unexpected.

Merry Christmas.

Mrs. Newman

Last Week of 2012

Here we are at the end of December already.

Please note that the concert is Wednesday, Dec. 19th at 7:00.  I would ask that you have your children here between 6:30 and 6:45 in our classroom please.

Tomorrow is hot chocolate and cookie day - feel free to wear a Christmas hat too.

Wednesday is ugly Christmas sweater day - if you don't own one feel free to create one with supplies that you have not used on your tree.

I would like to thank each of you for the support you have shown your children and myself this first half of grade 3.

To each of you I send best wishes for a healthy, happy holiday season. All the best in 2013.

Math News

Well, we have finished up our numeration unit and are working on addition and subtraction strategies with one and two digit numbers.  It is important that your child recognize all the combinations of numbers that add up to ten (1+9, 2+8, etc) and that they know all the doubles facts (2+2, 3+3, to 20+20).  These basics are the skills that will be built on to teach them strategies to figure out tricky facts.  Please use cards, dice, mathletics, shopping trips in the store and other real math opportunities to help them see addition and subtraction as skills that are needed throughout life.

Still looking for some sunglasses for the concert next Wednesday.

Enjoy the snow!
